Bitter gourd, also known as bitter gourd , is a plant of the Cucurbitaceae family. It is an annual climbing herb. Stems, branches, petioles and pedicels are covered with pilose hairs and tendrils in axils. The leaves are 3 to 12 cm in diameter and have 5 to 7 palmately deep lobes. The lobes are elliptical and the outer edges are serrated. Flowering at the turn of spring and summer, monoecious, yellow. The fruit is oblong, with many irregular tumor-like protrusions on the surface. The seeds are hidden in fleshy fruits, and are wrapped in red sacs when they are ripe. Bitter melon is a kind of vegetable that people love. It is widely cultivated in South Asia, Southeast Asia, China, and the Caribbean Islands.
